Through the eyes of a rental service agent

By  - Published on

Many people visit the rental center: some to get started on the slopes, many to take winter sports up again and others to try something new such as a snowscoot or a yooner for example. From booking the equipment online to picking it up on site, the staff makes sure that everyone is safely equipped for a great day on the slopes! So here’s the blog post through the eyes of a rental service agent. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look with one of our employees.

Justin Bridger has been with the Mont SUTTON rental team for over 5 years. Being a native of the area, he followed the family tradition by applying to work at the mountain as well: “My father and mother met when they were both ski instructors at the time. Even my two older sisters worked in customer service. It’s really a family story at Mont SUTTON.’’

His typical day

Since Justin is studying Aerospace Engineering Technique on the south shore during the week, he comes back to Sutton on weekends to see his gang from the rental shop: “When I come to do my shift, it’s not just because I like the job or for the numerous advantages of working at the mountain. My colleagues and friends, with whom I have a lot of fun and laughs, is the main reason why the days go by so quickly.”

He starts his typical day around 7:30 a.m., just before the rental shop opens. He makes sure everything is in order before the first customers come to pick up their equipment. He reinstalls the climbing skins, which have dried overnight, on the skis and split boards so the equipment is ready to go. The “presets”, which are the adjustment of the skis and snowboards in advance according to the reservations, are prepared the day before and, if necessary, finalized in the morning increasing efficiency when the equipment is picked up by the clients. A system that continues to improve each season: “Our boss, Nathalie, always considers our suggestions to make our job easier. For example, this year there will be a pick-up time associated with each reservation to ensure that the customer’s equipment is ready in time and to improve service.” Otherwise, throughout the day, Justin helps customer with the fitting of the equipment, makes sure boot sizes and equipment sizes are correct, makes adjustments as needed, while reciting the safety talk depending on what the customer has chosen to rent. Before the start of the ski season, each rental employee must attend training sessions on the different types of equipment to respect the conditions of use and to learn the proper methods of adjustment and waxing. They are then certified for the year. Your safety is our priority!

Once customers return their equipment to the rental center, Justin collects the ski or snowboard boots and gives the customer their own boots. At around 4pm, at the end of the day, he contacts the clients who have not yet returned their equipment to the rental center to remind them of the closing of the mountain. Once all equipment is collected, it’s time to close the rental center: “We start the fans and turn up the heat to dry the boots, hang the climbing skins to dry as well, clean up, close the cash register and that’s it.” Also, what’s perfect for Justin with the flexible hours is that he doesn’t come home too late on Sunday nights for his return to school the next day.

Combining passions

Justin fell in love with skiing at Mont SUTTON when he was in the Opti-Ski Club as a kid. He pursues his passion whenever he gets the chance to put on his skis, whether it is only for a few runs or on his days off. Also having a passion for cinema and pre-university studies in this field, Justin jumped on the opportunity to combine his passions by participating in the IF3 SUTTON Videoquest contest. He was in fact crowned grand winner of the contest last year with his video “Break Time” that was filmed during the 2019-2020 season. We invite you to watch his short film featuring his workplace at Mont SUTTON. This year you will find him at the workshop taking on new challenges! As you can see, it is possible to mix work, personal challenges, and fun.
