INHABITING THE FOREST: CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Great news: Mont SUTTON and DesPrés are joining forces to launch a new phase of the Sculptures on the mountain (Les Arts à la montagne) project, an outdoor sculpture art trail that has been set up along the edges of hiking trails and ski runs for several years now!
A first Call for Proposals is therefore being launched today to commission the creation of a first artwork as part of this new partnership.
Call for Proposals open to everyone
Artists are invited to submit a proposal for a work intended to be temporary, but with a minimum lifespan of one year, to be installed at the mountain by the end of August! This work, sculpture, or installation must meet the main execution criteria of engaging with the landscape, creating a dialogue with the materials of the site, and offering visitors a meaningful sensory experience of the mountain.
Professional artists and artist collectives from the Eastern Townships are therefore invited to submit a work that pays particular attention to the materials chosen, their origin, their transformation, and their relationship to the territory, understood as a living environment with which to engage.
The Call for Proposals will run until Monday, June 1. All details & terms are available online on the DesPrés website here (french only).
To submit their applications, artists must complete the form on our partner’s website (french only) within the prescribed timeframe. A jury will then select the chosen installation and contact the selected artist.
About DesPrés
Until very recently known as D’Arts et de rêves, DesPrés’ mission is to support the creative development of professional artists by welcoming them in residence and providing creation spaces that combine art and nature, while fostering educational encounters with the public.
Rooted in the Sutton community and in dialogue with cultural circles and the driving forces of the region, DesPrés creates artistic experiences that bring contemporary art closer to citizens: participatory workshops, artist talks, and the Pour la suite du monde festival.
DesPrés also welcomes and supports artists whose practices explore forms of creation in partnership with the living world, thereby helping to renew the ways we inhabit the territory.
Context of the Partnership
For several years, Mont SUTTON has been integrating sculptures into its natural environment, inviting visitors of all generations to discover the mountain through an experience that connects walking — or skiing in winter — with landscape and local artistic creations.
Through its extensive experience in the visual arts sector, DesPrés will contribute to the artistic and curatorial development of this new phase of the Sculptures on the mountain (Les Arts à la montagne) project.
This first step therefore aims to explore the presence of an artwork in a mountain setting through a semi-permanent piece, making it possible to examine the relationship between artistic creation, territory, and the visitor experience. This pilot project will thus lay the groundwork for the future development of the mountain art trail!
