A new phase of investments at Mont SUTTON
Sutton, March 16th 2021 – Mont SUTTON announces a second important phase of investments in order to diversify and develop a four season offer while consolidating and improving the skiing product as well.
By the end of this phase, more than $10M will have been invested in improvement and development efforts at the mountain, an undertaking by the new ownership since the purchase of Mont SUTTON in 2016. The launch of these new investments has been accelerated thanks to the allocation of nearly $1.8M in financial assistance by the Gouvernement du Québec.
This assistance will enable new investments of $5M by 2023 in line with the strategic development plan, in addition to the $5M already invested. All these projects will allow Mont SUTTON to enrich and increase its offer of new distinctive outdoor activities as well as to develop, improve and upgrade some outdoor infrastructures and existing equipment.
Increase the tourism offer and stimulate the economy
The announcement of the governmental assistance was made today by the Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Caroline Proulx, the Minister for Education, Minister responsible for the Status of Women and MNA for Brome-Missisquoi, Mrs. Isabelle Charest, and the President of Tourism Eastern Townships, Mr. Benoit Sirard.
“Mont SUTTON is a major attraction, not only for the region, but for all of Quebec. By developing an exceptional experience for visitors over 4 seasons, Mont SUTTON expands its attractiveness and maximises economic benefits that profit this major recreational tourism hub. We will continually support projects that align with a responsible and sustainable development perspective in regards to tourism in Quebec”. Caroline Proulx, Minister of Tourism
The amounts announced by the government and the investments at Mont SUTTON will increase the notoriety of the mountain, enhance the tourism offer in the region, ensure the attractiveness of the Sutton area and by the same token stimulate the regional economy.
In addition to the 14 jobs created over the last few years, these investments will consolidate the latter and allow for the creation of 20 new jobs at the mountain, while ensuring economic benefits for the region.
“Mont SUTTON has a very important role in the region, obviously for the tourism offer, but also in an economic development perspective. Its presence benefits businesses, agrotourism and our regional producers.” Isabelle Charest, Minister for Education, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women and MNA for Brome-Missisquoi
New activity: Double zipline, the longest in the region
Spearheads of this second phase of investments at Mont SUTTON are beyond a doubt the new ziplines. Starting this summer, thrill seekers will be well served with a double zipline, whose first section of 1 km will be unique and will become the longest in the magnificent region of Eastern Townships and among the longest in all of Quebec. The first portion will take off from the top of the main chairlift and will offer breathtaking views of the Sutton region and valley, before journeying through the rich canopy of the mountain and flying high above the ski trails. A second section of zipline, nearly 400 m in length, will find its destination in proximity of the main chalet at the foot of the mountain. It will be almost 1400 m of zipline courses in service this year at Mont SUTTON.
North American first: zipline with turns amongst the trees
To increase the zipline offer at Mont SUTTON and which will be nothing less than a North American first, in its final development stages is a zipline with turns. It will come to fruition in the near future. Completely anchored in the DNA of Mont SUTTON, it will please zipline lovers by its uniqueness and by its course woven into the surrounding nature, taking you through the trees at high speed.
Continuous improvement, development and modernisation
These latest investments enable the continuation of the strategic development plan initiated in 2016. Since its undertaking and during phase 1, the resort has proceeded to improve the capacity of the snowmaking system (pumps, piping, new snow guns) and to acquire new grooming machines, the development of mountain bike trails in partnership with Plein air Sutton/MTB, the development of a rest and restaurant area for the summer period and much more. This new phase of investments will serve, in addition to increasing the offer, to develop and improve existing ski and mountain bike trails. Furthermore, the phase aims to develop recreational and obstacle courses, culminating in a signature lookout that will offer visitors exceptional views of the beautiful Sutton region. All of this will be done to highlight the surrounding environment, the unique views and landscapes. Hence, to create a more captivating and stimulating mountain experience. An experience filled with “Purement SUTTON” moments!
Finally, the addition of an RFID access system will allow direct access to the lifts. This innovative technology, which is increasingly used by ski resorts, enhances the customer experience by allowing online purchases of all the access products and reducing wait times at the ticket office. This technology will make it easier and faster for users to access the mountain.
“We are reaching another important milestone of our strategic development plan with the completion of these projects. By becoming a leading four-season destination in Quebec, we will ensure the resort’s sustainability and further contribute to the regional economy. This will promote the synergy between the local attractions, the village and the mountain. It’s beneficial for all! ” Jean-Michel Ryan, CEO of Mont SUTTON
These new projects are completely in line with the values of Mont SUTTON which aim to offer an environment and experiences where the surpassing of oneself through an awe-inspiring nature, is at the heart of the priorities!
